What Our Guests Say:
My name is Norm Jager. I am 80 years old and have lived in Oregon for most of my life. I have had the pleasure of spending time at John Berger's Cummings Creek Retreat near John Day, Oregon, on several occasions.
The drive alone is worth the trip. Traveling through Oregon's beautiful high desert and following the John Day River is a memorable experience. The retreat is located between Dayville and Mt. Vernon, and after turning off the main road, you'll enjoy a scenic drive through the wilderness, passing through several gates before arriving at the property. Along the way, you'll pass the bunkhouse, a trout pond filled with rainbow trout, and it's common to spot deer and other wildlife.
When you arrive, you're welcomed by a beautiful cabin tucked away in a peaceful clearing surrounded by nature. I was pleasantly surprised to find all the comforts of home, including a full kitchen, a heated bathroom with a shower, and even a washer and dryer. Although the retreat is completely off-grid, John's ingenuity has made it incredibly comfortable with solar power and battery systems that provide everything you need.
The time I've spent at the retreat has allowed me to relax, recharge, and truly enjoy the serenity of the outdoors. John is also an outstanding cook. Every meal I've had has been first-class—white tablecloth quality in the middle of the wilderness.
I've also had the opportunity to help John with the property's three professional 3-D archery courses, which are an incredible addition for outdoor enthusiasts.
Anyone looking for an authentic outdoor adventure will have an unforgettable experience at Cummings Creek Retreat.
As an Army veteran, I especially admire John's commitment to giving back. His passion for inviting disabled veterans to enjoy a special weekend at the retreat at no cost is something I deeply respect. It's a wonderful mission, and I commend him for creating such a meaningful place for those who have served.
